The AAMC is committed to supporting learners throughout their medical education journeys and improving the transition to residency for future physicians. As part of this ongoing commitment, the AAMC has established a new, simplified fee rate and structure, beginning with the 2025 ERAS season, which starts in June 2024. For information about fees for the 2024 season, which are in effect through May 31, 2024 at 5 p.m. ET, please review the 2024 ERAS season residency fees page.

2025 ERAS Application Fee Summary

Number of Applications Per Specialty Cost Per Application
1-30 $11
31 or more $30

Note: Cost is per specialty; pricing resets with each additional specialty.

Example 1: 30 Emergency Medicine programs [30 x $11] = $330

Example 2: 43 Internal Medicine programs [(30 X $11) + (13 X $30)] + 7 Radiology programs [7 X $11] = $797 (Fee Assistance Program-approved applicants would pay $797-$558=$239)

Example 3: 32 Internal Medicine programs [(30 x $11) + (2 x $30)] + 32 Emergency Medicine programs [(30 x $11) + (2 x $30)] = $780

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the AAMC changing the ERAS fee structure now?

The AAMC has been working for many years to advance holistic review for programs and reduce the cost of applying to residency by offering applicants data that makes them feel confident reducing the number of applications they submit. For example, we published and shared the Diminishing Returns data with applicants for many years and continue to support the Residency Explorer™ tool (that displays data from six organizations).

The current ERAS pricing model was created in an environment with lower application volumes and reduced financial impact to applicants. The new ERAS pricing structure aims to enhance the transition to residency for learners by addressing the present challenges and reducing application costs.

Back to question list

How does the fee change benefit applicants?

This fee change responds to feedback from the transition to residency community. It lowers overall application fees and simplifies the cost structure, providing significant benefits to applicants. This adjustment is part of the broader AAMC strategy to further improve ERAS products and services, provide better data and information for applicants, and bring the community together to address the toughest issues in the transition to residency.

Back to question list

How does the new fee structure compare to the existing fee structure?

This chart demonstrates the differences between residency applicant costs for the current 2024 ERAS season (through May 2024) and the 2025 fee structure (which goes into effect in June 2024).

NOTE: For applicants who were previously approved for AAMC Fee Assistance Program benefits, they will automatically receive an additional 60% discount on the new application fees (up to 50 applications).

30 $11 per application = $330 $289 for the first 20, plus $23 for each additional = $519 $189 - 36% decrease $132 - 75% decrease
40 $11 for the first 30, plus $30 for each additional = $630 $519 for the first 30, plus $27 for each additional = $789 $159 – 20% decrease $252 - 68% decrease

Back to question list

Will the new ERAS fee structure apply to fellowship program applicants?

No. For the 2025 ERAS season, the new structure will apply only to residency applications. The AAMC will evaluate potential fee structure changes for fellowship applications in future seasons.

Back to question list

How much money will the new fee structure save applicants?

Most applicants will save up to 36% over previous seasons. Applicants who receive the expanded AAMC Fee Assistance benefits will save an additional 60% discount on up to 50 applications.

Back to question list

How did the AAMC determine this fee structure model?

The AAMC has conducted multiple years of research and partnered with learners, medical schools, specialties, and financial assistance experts to develop the new, simpler cost per application pricing model.

We are offering $11 for up to 30 applications to align with the variety of program signals that specialties selected for this year's MyERAS® application and to reflect the diminishing returns research previously published by the AAMC.

Back to question list

How does the new application pricing model compare to the costs of other residency application services?

The fee structures are all quite different. We want to provide a simpler fee model that reduces the cost to applicants while not contributing to an even higher volume of applications.

Back to question list

How does the ERAS program contribute to the AAMC and its work to strengthen medical education?

The AAMC invests ERAS fees to support a wide range of mission-driven activities that support medical education. These include developing and deploying educational resources for premed and medical students (see list below), graduate medical education advocacy, research on important medical education topics, and much more.

The AAMC executes on its mission to improve the health of all by investing fees from its services — including the ERAS program — into programs and resources for everyone from premeds to medical students and residents, medical school and teaching hospital staff, faculty, and leadership.

A few examples of learner resources include:

  • The AAMC Fee Assistance Program for premed and medical students (which will be expanded to include ERAS residency applicants beginning in 2025).
  • AAMC Virtual Medical School Fair and the Virtual Specialty Forum.
  • Careers in Medicine®.
  • Financial Information, Resources, Services, and Tools (FIRST).
  • Residency Explorer tool.
  • Application and interview guides, tutorials, webinars, videos, and more.
