Since the AAMC SJT exam is one section, your score report will include a single, total score ranging from 1 to 9. You will also receive a percentile rank which shows the percentages of examinees who received the same score or a lower score than you did on the exam. The percentile shows how your score compares to the scores of other examinees.

How Exams Are Scored

When you elect to have your exam scored on exam day, you will select the school(s) to receive your score report. You do not need to take any further action after exam day to ensure the school(s) you selected receive your report. The AAMC will send your score report directly to the school(s); however, we will send it separately from your AMCAS 2021 application.

Schools will have access to score reports the same day they are released to examinees. For the AMCAS 2022 application cycle, only participating medical schools will be accepting AAMC SJT scores and may consider them as one part of their ultimate admission decision.

For the AMCAS 2022 application, if you decide to apply to a school that you did not select on exam day, you still have the opportunity to send your AAMC SJT score report. Complete the Request to Release AAMC SJT Score form and email it to asksjt@aamc.org. You may select additional schools after exam day as many times as you wish; however, we recommend selecting all schools to which you have applied or intend to apply as early as possible in the 2022 application season. Requests to select additional schools must be received no later than Aug. 31, 2022.

The AAMC will not automatically send your AAMC SJT score report to all of the participating schools to which you submit an AMCAS application. Once you select a school, either on exam day or through the Request to Release AAMC SJT Score form, you may not de-select a school.

How Exams Are Scored

The AAMC collaborated with medical educators, including faculty, admissions officers, and student and diversity affairs officers to develop the scoring key for the SJT, i.e., the key effectiveness rating for each response.

Your score is based on the extent to which your effectiveness ratings of each response align with medical educators’ ratings. Full credit is awarded for an item if your response matches the medical educators’ rating. Partial credit is awarded if your rating is close to the medical educators’ rating. Higher scores suggest that your ratings align more closely with medical educators ratings; whereas lower scores suggest your ratings align less closely with medical educators ratings.

Please keep in mind that the SJT is one of several factors schools may consider when evaluating applicants. We’re advising schools to consider the SJT in the context of the broader application and to be cautious in how they use the AAMC SJT in the initial years, taking the opportunity to use the SJT to identify applicants whose competencies align with their school’s unique mission and goals.
