Overview
The Tilikum Summer Health Experience at Portland State University, in collaboration with the Northwest Native American Center of Excellence (NNACoE) at Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU), offers a unique and immersive experience for American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) undergraduate students interested in health professions. The program combines academic enrichment, professional development, and cultural engagement to prepare students for future careers in healthcare while staying connected to their Indigenous heritage.
Tilikum features three weeks of virtual programming followed by two weeks of in-person activities at PSU and OHSU. Students will engage in core science courses, cultural wellness activities, clinical shadowing, and professional development workshops, all within a supportive and culturally responsive environment.
Clinical Experience
Students will have hands-on opportunities in PSU’s Labs and OHSU’s Simulation Center, shadowing healthcare professionals in medical, dental, and public health settings. The program also includes specialized training in areas like Tribal Opioid Response, led by the Northwest Portland Area Indian Health Board.

Finances
Meals: A meal allowance will be provided during the in-person portion of the program.
Stipend: Each student will receive a $1,000 stipend, distributed in two installments.
Travel: Need-based travel assistance of up to $500 will be provided to help cover travel to Portland for the in-person portion.
Living
Housing: Housing will be provided for participants during the two-week in-person segment.
Social Activities
Students will participate in a variety of social and cultural activities, including a Welcome Dinner, NAYA garden visit, Grand Ronde Cultural Center tour, and other community-based events. These activities are designed to build community and strengthen cultural connections among participants.
