How to Stay Grounded While Applying to Medical School

Applying to medical school can feel overwhelming at times. Learning how to manage stress will help you successfully complete the MCAT® exam, the AAMC PREview® exam, the AMCAS® application, medical school interviews, and more. Below are four tips on how to take care of your mental health and stay grounded while you apply:

  1. Utilize support systems available to you. You can find various resources at your school to assist in applying to medical school. For starters, you should discuss your premed pathway with a prehealth advisor. If you do not have access to a prehealth advisor, read this article by Jason D’Antonio, PhD, health professions program director at Carnegie Mellon University. You should also seek out other on-campus support and resources; for example, find mentors in academic departments, join an on-campus club with like-minded peers, attend health professions career fairs, and meet with a financial aid officer to learn about your payment options.
     
  2. Prioritize mindfulness. The Mayo Clinic describes mindfulness as “a type of meditation in which you focus on being intensely aware of what you’re sensing and feeling in the moment, without interpretation or judgment.” Practicing mindfulness involves using techniques such as yoga, meditation, or self-reflective writing to work on breathing methods, guided imagery, and other practices to relax the body and mind. The American Medical Association outlines that mindfulness can also be practiced while doing everyday tasks, such as studying or doing homework. Pausing throughout your day to take a breath and reflect is one way you can be aware of your own emotions and state of being without interrupting your schedule.
     
  3. Strengthen relationships. Humans are social creatures by nature and need social connections for survival. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, our relationships with family, friends, coworkers, and community members can have a major impact on our health and well-being. Being socially connected increases your likelihood of making healthy choices and having better mental and physical health. Scheduling time with friends, participating in extracurricular activities, and staying connected with family will help you throughout the process of applying to medical school.
     
  4. Look after your physical health. Your physical health is just as important as your mental health. Try to prioritize activities like taking long walks, eating balanced meals, practicing self-care, getting a full night of sleep, and more. You are less likely to feel overwhelmed, anxious, or burnt out during the application process by staying active.

Finding time to focus on yourself can be challenging while applying to medical school. However, if you start implementing these healthy habits now, you can put your best foot forward throughout the process. Medical school admissions officers will see the best version of you and can envision your success as a future medical student and doctor.
