Program Name: NIH Loan Repayment Programs (LRP)

Program Description: The NIH Loan Repayment Programs (LRPs) are a set of programs established by Congress and designed to recruit and retain highly qualified health professionals into biomedical or biobehavioral research careers.
Eligible Specialties: Scientists, researchers, physicians, and other health professionals holding an M.D., Ph.D., Psy.D., Pharm. D., D.O., D.D.S., D.M.D., D.P.M., D.C., N.D., or equivalent doctoral degree from an accredited institution. 
Service Requirements: NIH offers five extramural LRPs (where research is done outside of NIH at any non-profit institution); each requires a two-year commitment to conduct at least part-time research (minimum 20 hours per week average) in one of the following areas: Clinical Research, Pediatrics Research, Health Disparities Research, Contraception and Infertility Research, Clinical Research for Individuals from Disadvantaged Backgrounds. NIH offers three intramural LRPs (for NIH employees doing research at NIH); each requires a two- or three-year service commitment: General Research (3 years), AIDS Research (2 years), Clinical Research for Individuals from Disadvantaged Backgrounds (2 years)
