Letters of Interest

Estimated Read time: 1 minute

Letters of interest are optional messages sent after interviews – either by applicants to programs or by programs to applicants – to express enthusiasm or desire to match.

In most cases, they have little to no impact on ranking decisions. Many programs do not consider post-interview communication in their decision making, and some actively discourage it. It is important to follow each program’s stated communication guidelines, as failing to do so may negatively affect your application. If you are considering whether to send a letter of interest or intent, work with your career or specialty advisor to make the decision and draft your message.

The National Resident Matching Program® (NRMP®) Match Participation Agreement (MPA) sets clear rules for interaction between programs and applicants to avoid coercion from either side. It’s critical to follow the terms of the Match Participation Agreement. Programs or applicants who violate the Match Participation Agreement are subject to sanctions that can include being banned from participating in NRMP’s Matching Program for up to several years.
