Go to a Pre-Med Conference. Here's Why

Attending a pre-med conference or recruitment fair is a good way to learn about multiple schools, programs, and admissions requirements all in one place. You’ll be able to meet lots of medical school admissions professionals and talk to them about the specific opportunities at their school.

The AAMC and similar organizations also attend these fairs to provide information about their resources to help you on your path to medical school. Make sure to stop by the AAMC booth to talk about our services and tools so you can be as prepared—and as successful—as possible when you apply to medical school.

Pre-med conferences can also help you narrow your program selections while being cost effective. Visiting every school that you’re thinking about attending is expensive and time-consuming. Any registration fees are often significantly subsidized for students and the cost will be far less than what you would pay to travel to several different campuses. In addition, conferences and fairs typically will include workshops, networking sessions, and presentations about preparing for the MCAT exam, applying to medical school, or how to pay for your medical education.

Here’s a sampling of topics the AAMC covers at pre-med conferences and fairs:

  • 10 Things to Know Before Applying to Med School
  • Paying for Medical School: Get the Facts
  • How to Get Organized Now (You’ll Be Thankful Later)
  • Roadmap to Becoming a Doctor
  • A New MCAT® Exam for New Doctors
  • Insider Tips: Applying to Medical School with AMCAS®
  • The Achiever’s Guide to Finding Your Summer Experience

It’s always a good idea dress professionally or in business casual attire for most fairs. Conferences are often very busy, so your one-on-one time with admissions representatives may be limited. Research which schools will be in attendance and visit their websites to familiarize yourself with their programs and requirements. This way you’ll be able to ask questions specific to their school and they’ll see that you are prepared. Bring bring something to take notes on your conversations so you can review them as you complete your application or if you are called back for an interview.

Keep your eyes open for the AAMC coming to conferences near you! Our staff is going on the road to answer your questions about how to develop your career in medicine. Talk to us in October at the UC Davis Pre-health and Pre-medical Professions National Conference!

Not in California? Don’t worry! Check with your pre-health advisor at your undergraduate institution about fairs and conferences in your area. Medical schools near you may also host events. Additionally, many conferences stream presentations or have recordings available online after the event.

We hope to talk with you at one of these events and help you on your path to becoming a doctor.
