2020 Income Eligibility Change FAQs

Please review the eligibility requirements for the criteria. In order to determine if you are eligible you must complete the Fee Assistance application. Applicants who are denied may request a reconsideration of their denial based upon household loss of income since March 2020 due to COVID-19 by emailing fapreconsideration@aamc.org.

Previously denied applicants were sent communication on April 20 with instructions on how to resubmit their application to be reviewed using the new eligibility requirements. If you have not received an email and believe there is an error, please contact us at 202-828-0600 or fap@aamc.org

To be eligible for Fee Assistance you must complete the application using documentation from 2019. Once you have completed the process you will be notified if you are approved or denied. If you are denied, you are eligible to submit a Fee Assistance Reconsideration Request to fapreconsideration@aamc.org that will take into account household loss of income from COVID-19. Fee Assistance benefits are available for use once an application has been approved.

If you were denied for fee assistance and have experienced a change in income since March 2020 due to COVID-19 please email fapreconsideration@aamc.org to request reconsideration of your denial. You must complete the Reconsideration Request Form, provide supporting financial documents for calendar year 2019 (if required),  and a copy of the most recent pay stub for the household experiencing the loss. We will review your submitted information, if appropriate will adjust the 2019 household income downwards based on the estimated loss. If the adjusted household income is below 400% of the national poverty level for that family size, you are eligible.

In order to be eligible for a reconsideration request you must complete the Fee Assistance application and receive a denial. The supporting financial documentation that you based your income on for  calendar year 2019 will be required to complete the reconsideration request. A denial for reconsideration due to coronavirus COVID-19 is final.

The supporting documentation that you submit is based on the type of income entered for calendar year 2019.  In order to complete processing of your application, please confirm that you have filled out the financial section correctly and the corresponding documentation (1040’s, 1099, W-2’s, SS etc.) is uploaded. Please review the required supporting documentation for more information.

Fee Assistance Program benefits are not retroactive. Benefits may only be applied after the Fee Assistance Program benefits have been awarded. No refunds will be issued for any fees paid before you have been approved for the Fee Assistance Program.

The eligibility change, from 300 percent to 400 percent of the national poverty level for that family size, will be in place for the 2020 Fee Assistance Program application cycle.
